Q. What is the difference between a debit card and a credit card?
A. Debit cards and credit cards offer convenient ways to make purchases without cash, but they work in different ways.
A debit card comes linked to your checking account and acts like a digital check, drawing money from your checking account immediately at the time of purchase or withdrawal. This means you can only spend what you currently have available.
Credit cards, on the other hand, require you to apply for them separately and act as a line of credit. You borrow money from the bank up to a set limit and have a period to pay it back in full without incurring interest.
Q: Who can have a business debit card?
A. Any employee of your business can have a debit card. However, an authorized signer on the business account must request it and complete the necessary paperwork.
Q. How many debit cards can my business have?
A. There's typically no set limit on the number of debit cards a business can have. However, each card needs to be assigned to a specific person, and that person can only have one card linked to the same business account.
To determine the exact number of cards you'll need, consider how many people require card access for business expenses.
Q. How do I get multiple debit cards for my business account?
A. Any authorized signer on your business account can request additional debit cards. You can visit any of our branches to do this.
If you need a card for an employee, you'll need to provide their personal information, including their date of birth, Social Security number, and a copy of their driver's license.
Q. How is my card protected from fraud?
A. Bank of Utah is committed to keeping your cards safe. We provide EnFact fraud protection, a built-in feature that monitors your card activity and alerts you of suspicious purchases. This proactive tool helps protect your account around the clock.
Q. How do I select or change my PIN (Personal Identification Number)?
A. You can select your PIN when calling to activate your debit card or you can call Bank of Utah at 801-409-5000 and choose Option 1 for debit cards.
You can change your PIN by calling 1-800-992-3808 (toll-free) or by calling Bank of Utah. You can also change it at a Bank of Utah branch ATM.
Q. What's the difference between a PIN purchase and a non-PIN purchase, or signature purchase?
A. Your debit card offers two ways to make purchases: PIN and non-PIN, also called signature. Choosing "debit" at checkout allows you to enter a PIN, similar to using an ATM.
However, some merchants may offer a "credit" option where you sign a receipt instead. Remember: UChoose Rewards requires most purchases to be processed as signature transactions to qualify for points. Online and phone purchases typically are considered signature transactions.
Our friendly branch representatives can assist you with any debit card needs or questions.
