Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the difference between a debit card and a credit card?
A. Both debit and credit cards make it easy to pay without cash, but they work differently.
A debit card is linked to your checking account and acts like a digital check, pulling money directly from your account at the time of purchase or withdrawal. This means you can only spend what’s available in your account.
Credit cards, on the other hand, act as a line of credit. You borrow money up to a set limit and pay it back later, often with interest if not paid in full by the due date.
Q. How do I get a debit card?
A. You can request a debit card when you open a checking account with Bank of Utah. If you already have an account and didn’t request a card initially, you can contact us or visit a branch to add one to your account.
Q. What is Card Manager, and how can I use it with my debit card?
A. Card Manager is a tool in Online and Mobile Banking that gives you greater control over your debit card. You can lock or unlock your card, set spending limits and track transactions in real time. If you’re getting a new or replacement card, a temporary digital version may be available in Card Manager while your physical card is on the way. You can add the temporary card to your mobile wallet. Once your physical card arrives and you activate it in Card Manager, it will automatically update the temporary one in your wallet.
Q. Can I use my debit card online?
A. Yes. You can use your debit card to shop online or make payments over the phone by entering your card number, expiration date and CVV code — just like you would with a credit card.
Q. How do I select or change my PIN (Personal Identification Number)?
A. You can choose your PIN when activating your debit card in Card Manager. To change your PIN later, use Card Manager, call 1-800-992-3808 (toll-free), or visit a Bank of Utah ATM.
Q. What's the difference between a PIN purchase and a non-PIN or signature purchase?
A. If your card is lost or stolen, log in to Online or Mobile Banking and use Card Manager to lock it immediately. Then contact us as soon as possible to report the issue and request a replacement. Locking your card will stop new purchases; any recurring charges will still be processed.
Q. How is my card protected from fraud?
A. Bank of Utah offers EnFact fraud protection, which monitors your card activity and alerts you of any suspicious transactions. You can also lock and unlock your card anytime using our Card Manager tool for added control and peace of mind.
